On-screen, you know everything about their relationships, from how they got together to what their daily struggles are. But, as we all know, TV is not reality and these actors have real relationships behind the scenes.
Like most people in the spotlight though, your favourite Sex Education cast members also like to keep their private lives private. Still, we’ve managed to do some insta-sleuthing and have rounded up all the details about their relationship statuses IRL.
WATCH: Netflix announces Sex Education is returning for season four
Of course, there are a couple of stars who’re new to the scene—Rakhee Thakrar (A.K.A. Miss Sands, an English teacher), Anne-Marie Duff (who plays Maeve’s mum) and George Robinson (who plays Isaac) are fairly new to Hollywood, so there is little information about these three at this stage.
On that note, it would appear that some of our favourite cast members are still happily on the market—while others have sadly recently split with their respective partners.
As season three drops on Netflix, we of course got to wondering where they’re all at in 2021. Curious about the Sex Education cast’s boyfriends and girlfriends? Scroll on to see which of the stars are no longer single.
Asa Butterfield
Butterfield, who plays Otis Milburn, is believed to be currently single. The 22-year old child star previously dated his former co-star, Ella Purnell, in the movie Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children. However, he last posted with her on April 5, 2016.
There were also rumours that he was dating Nina Dobrev back in 2017. However, nothing ever came of this and it’s unlikely to be true considering Nina is 9 years older.
Connor Swindells and Aimee Lou Wood
If you’re new to the Sex Education circle, you’ll be heartwarmed, then quickly heartbroken to learn that Swindells (who plays the school bully Adam Groff) was actually dating fellow co-star Aimee Lou Wood, who plays Aimee Gibbs, for a while.
They were super cute together, often posting loved-up pictures. But sadly they’ve since split, with Aimee telling Grazia in September 2021: “We’d had some time apart and then we realised that maybe the relationship wasn’t serving us both. We still really love each other and respect each other. It was an okay breakup, it wasn’t dramatic.”
Gillian Anderson
Anderson, who plays Otis’ mother and well known sex therapist, was in a relationship with screenwriter Peter Morgan, the creator of Netflix’s The Crown, from 2016.
While Anderson was very private on her Instagram, she was pictured here with The Crown‘s Olivia Colman at the 2020 Golden Globes. In May 2021, Anderson appeared to confirm that she and Peter had sadly split, per The Daily Mail.
The talented actor has three children from previous relationships.
Ncuti Gatwa
Gatwa, AKA Eric Effiong, has kept his romantic life private on his Instagram, but it appears as though he used to date Jessica Hardwick (pictured). But besides this post from 2018, Gatwa has remained radio silent on his relationship status.
Emma Mackey
Your favourite Sex Education bad girl certainly appeared to be in a relationship when the show first aired with Dan Whitlam, an aspiring actor. After deleting her Instagram, it’s unknown as to whether Emma and Dan are still dating—they haven’t been spotted together recently.
Jemima Kirke
Jemima Kirke is a newcomer to the cast in season 3—her other half? Australian singer Alex Cameron. The pair have been dating for several years. Before that, Jemima was married to Michael Mosberg for eight years.
Patricia Allison
Allison, who plays Ola Nyman in the show, is currently dating Phillip Walsch. Walsch is an aspiring actor but also the artist behind the brand Nihilst.
Mikael Persbrandt
The show’s widowed Swedish handyman Jakob Nyman is actually married to Sanna Lundell in real life. They have been married since 2005 and together have 3 children.
Alistair Petrie
IRL, Moordale’s headmaster and father to Swindells’ character, Adam Groff, is married to Anna Scott and they have three sons.
