The 3 types of friends every girl should have

One for a reason, one for a season and one for a lifetime? Or not…

Let’s be real, the true loves of our lives are actually our friends. They’re the besties whose shoulders we cry on when we are having a bad day/month/year… The mates who we want to share in our special moments and create lifelong memories with.

From school through to uni through to work, these pals are the people who we spend most of our time with and who know us the best.

We are all used to watching friendship stories play out, from Taylor Swift and Selena Gomez to our fave TV shows, and these tales re-enforce what is true for most of us – that while some pals are always there offering us emotional support, others are the good time gals who we need to shine a light on our fun side.

The fact is, as we move through life, friendships change, grow, fall away… And it’s true what they say, some friends are there for a reason, some for a season, and other friendships last a lifetime.

But what does this mean for these relationships IRL? Read on to find out.

Friends for a reason

This pal is there to teach you a lesson. Even though these friendships can be short lived, the benefits you gain are long lasting and positive. Perhaps you’ve been through a bad break up and this mate is there to remind you better relationships are out there. Or maybe you’re on a get-fit mission and this is the pal you need to chivvy you along to the gym each day.

You fit together perfectly for a time like pieces of a puzzle. Whatever your individual difficulty or dilemma, you’ll benefit from knowing them as they help you with a realisation that’s needed right now or support you through a tough time. Eventually, after it serves its purpose, you can step back and be grateful for the lessons this friendship has taught you, and you’ll understand why they were there in the first place.

Class of '07
Best friends forever? Prime Video’s Class of ’07’s Zoe and Amelia are rebuilding their friendship in the middle of an apocalypse. The series follows a group of ex-classmates who become trapped at their all-girls high school after an apocalyptic tidal wave hits during their 10-year-reunion party. Old friendships are rebuilt while other raw wounds resurface, as the women learn to survive in this strange new world. Released March 17. (Credit: Prime Video Class of ’07)

Friends for a season

This friendship follows you through a certain period or season of your life. It could last a few months, or a few years. Maybe it’s a pal who you meet through work or uni, or the fun and fabulous friend who you just can’t say no to when their invite to the latest bar opening pings through on your phone.

You’ll go through rites of passage together, and share so many great memories, but once the joy and excitement are over you may grow apart as that common ground that was holding you together grows too thin.

When a chapter of your life comes to an end you may find it’s time to say goodbye to this friendship, as you don’t see as much of your pal anymore as you naturally move away from the season you have shared and expand into the next part of your life.

Friends for a lifetime

While part of growing up means you tend to shed the girl gang for more simple and low key friendships, there are some pals who stick around and stay in your life through thick and thin. They’re the ones you can tell your deepest secrets to, who know the in jokes, and who are there for you through all the break ups (and all the make ups).

These long-term friendships may start in childhood, or you may meet this pal later in life, but once you have them you won’t them let go. Pals like these are always by your side, they can help you feel less stressed and lonely, and they grow alongside you.

Perhaps, like Zoe (Emily Browning) and Amelia (Megan Smart) in Class of ’07 you’ll find your friendship has its ups and downs, but you’ll always find your way back to each other. This is when a relationship lasts a lifetime.

The hilarious new Australian series Class of ’07 is coming to Prime Video on March 17. Start your 30-day free trial today.
