If there are two shows we’d never really think to have parallels, it’s Riverdale and Black Mirror.
While they’re both F-ed up in their own unique way, Black Mirror is DARK on a whole new level.
However, amidst the dark, depressing themes – there are hidden gems that leave us uplifted (and not wanting to throw our phones in the ocean).
For example: season 3 episode 4: San Junipero.
To refresh your memory, or recap if you haven’t seen it… the episode portrays a ‘heaven on earth’ virtual world for people who are dying. They are able to go live in this world as their best selves, and be/do WHATEVER the hell they want. Instead of passing onto whatever comes after death, they can live there forever. It’s bliss. In the episode, two female characters fall in love. While most episodes end horribly, this one ended with them both deciding to stay in San Junipero after they die, happy and in love.
So how does it work in with Riverdale? Well, one fan has suggested that Toni Topaz and Cheryl Blossom’s relationship is similar. Especially because they’re both interracial relationships with a red head!
“That’s actually a very good fan theory,” Vanessa Morgan said. “There’s definitely a lot of similarities between Cheryl and [“San Junipero” character] Yorkie and Toni as Kelly. Who knows? Maybe [the show’s creator] Roberto, maybe that’s what he was thinking when he put us together.”
