Let’s be real, we’re never going to accept Dan Humphry as ‘Gossip Girl‘, but the reboot without Penn Badgley? Ridiculous.

The actor, aka Lonely Boy, sat down with ET while promoting YOU season two, where they asked him if he would return to the HBO reboot as his old role.
“Could Dan Humphrey…? I don’t… That’s a message I gotta put at the top of my inbox, you know, to think about,” he said. “I have not had conversations with any of the creators yet, but you know …”
That’s a yes to us!
Penn explained that getting back into his character of Dan wouldn’t be as easy as we all think. “I think it’s pretty clear that, like, I’ve never been a proponent of Dan Humphrey’s. I’ve never been necessarily the greatest friend or fan of Dan Humphrey, which now I reconcile in this way that I’m like, you know, I would love to contribute in a meaningful way to it. And I guess it would just depend on a lot of things,” he told ET. “It would depend on how and why he’s there.”
At least executive producer Joshua Safran wants Penn back! Recently, he admitted that he will try “rope him in there.” In fact, he wants them all back. “I would love for everyone to come back if they wanted to. The universe still exists. The characters talk about Serena, Blair, Chuck, Dan.”
We already know that the reboot will be five years after the original, and the new characters will address Gossip Girl and the original crew, but they will focus on new characters part of New York City’s elite.
The reboot will still be based on the same premies, but we can all agree that a lot has changed over the past decade.
Series co-creator Josh Schwartz revealed at the 2019 TV Critics Association summer press tour that Gossip Girl is actually all of us. Not just a Dan Humphrey-like figure.
“It didn’t really feel like a group of adults who were being controlled by Gossip Girl would make a lot of sense,” Schwartz explained, via E! News. “There was something really interesting about this idea that we are all Gossip Girl now, in our own way. We are all purveyors of our own social media surveillance state, and how that’s evolved, and how that has morphed and mutated and telling that story through a new generation of Upper East Side high school kids felt like the right time.”
