It’s a hard pill to swallow, we know, but Paul Wesley (Stefan Salvatore) and Nina Dobrev (Elena Gilbert) HATED each other on the set of The Vampire Diaries.

They call it ‘hate’… we call it ‘sexual chemistry’, but whatever. Tomayto-tomahto.

The good news is that they’re extremely close now, however, they have revealed to fans that when they first met they clashed quite a lot. It all started when Nina revealed on her co-star Candice King’s podcast Directionally Challenged the nasty news.

“Paul and I didn’t get along at the beginning of the show. I respected Paul Wesley, I didn’t like Paul Wesley. I realise now that there is a fine line between love and hate, and we despised each other so much that it read as love but it was burning just…. we really just didn’t get along.”

Ouch!

Talking to Entertainment Tonight, Paul reacted to his co-star’s scathing comments, laughing it off.

“What she said is absolutely true. First of all, Nina is my really good friend now, we talk all the time. It’s true when we first started filming TVD, we clashed.

“Creatively, it just wasn’t in sync. The fans would never have known that… but we were basically driving each other insane.”

He’s right, what we saw was total passion! We never would have guessed that stemmed from pure hate.

Although the pair have both made it clear that it didn’t take long for them to become pretty good friends.

Paul continued, “After a few seasons, we developed this absolute mutual love and I actually think that my best friendships always come from this evolution. So now, I just adore her, she adores me and I talk to her probably more than most of the other castmates.”

Referring to her podcast with Candice King, Paul reveals that he was with Candice when Nina made her comments, admitting that the whole thing was blown out of proportion. Nina even texted him to apologise for what she said… however, it was all true!

“I think the reason why people were surprised because it was sort of like the pillar of the love story. People were like, ‘What do you mean they didn’t get along???'”

It’s not the first time Paul has spoken about his ‘feud’ with Nina on set either. Earlier this month, he told US Weekly of a similar story after hearing Nina’s confession.

I think the point that Nina was making, and I’ll totally back her up on this, is that we totally clashed [the] first couple years in terms of just getting on each other’s nerves, and then developed this wonderful friendship. So it’s like this nice, happy ending.”

The 37-year-old Tell Me a Story actor added “I think sometimes when people work together nonstop, do press nonstop for years and years on end, you’re just — you don’t appreciate the person that’s in front of you. You’re like, ‘Oh, you know, I’m exhausted and tired.’ And I think now, it’s such a nice sort of story because we’re such good friends now. I think it was a cool lesson to learn. It’s like the people that kind of maybe you don’t get along with in the beginning later surprise you, and I think a lot of my friendships are like that.”

Thankfully now the pair are besties and ALL is right in the world.
