Yesterday, we were blessed with the final trailer for Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald.
It was VERY eye-opening and gave fans some great insight into what to expect.
Like, for example, the confirmation that Dumbledore and Grindelwald were in a romantic relationship when they were younger.
But the biggest revelation was definitely that we’re going to get a Nagini backstory. Yes, Voldemorts serpent, and Horcrux, actually used to be a female witch, who will be portrayed by Asian actress Claudia Kim.
But… while it’s all very exciting, a lot of people are calling the franchise out for choosing an Asian woman to play the role.
They also continued to call out the franchise for its past racism.
@Supervinh47 wrote, “Cho Chang [is] the demure ‘gentle flower’ and #Nagini [is] the sexually attractive ‘dragon lady.'” Another person also argued that Cho as well as Parvati and Padma Patil are given “very little proper development” as characters.
Young Adult writer Ellen Oh even wrote, “I feel like this is the problem when white people want to diversify and don’t actually ask POC how to do so. They don’t make the connection between making Nagini an Asian woman who later on is the pet of a white man. So I’m going to say it right now. That sh*t is racist.”
“Does this mean I now hate Harry Potter? No. I still love it,” Ellen wrote. “But let’s make it clear. Harry Potter is problematic AF. So let’s discuss it now so that our future generation of writers who create the next blockbuster books and movies can do better.”
