After playing a supernatural traumatised teen in the ’80s and teen sister to Sherlock Holmes, Stranger Things and Enola Holmes star Millie Bobby Brown is ready for a real challenge: playing the late legendary singer Amy Winehouse in a movie.
The 16-year-old actress, who stars alongside Louis Partridge, Henry Cavill. Helena Bonham Carter and Sam Claflin in Netflix’s Enola Holmes, recently spoke to Netflix Latinoamerica about the new film.
In the interview, Brown opens up about the heroines who inspired her—when she was younger, Selena Gomez and Miley Cyrus. Now, Natalie Portman, Angelina Jolie and Jodie Foster.
But, the most interesting piece of info comes when the outlet asks her who from history—alive or dead—she’d love to play in a film. Her answer? The iconic British rockstar Amy Winehouse, ofc.
“I wouldn’t say she’s historical, but I would love to play her,” she said. “Amy Winehouse I personally think is an icon to R&B, Blues and basically the whole culture of music.”
“I just love her music and was really impacted by her whole story. And so, I always say that I would love to play her.”
If not Amy Winehouse, Brown says, then “a historic fictional character, I would say Princess Leia [from Star Wars, famously performed by the late Carrie Fisher]”.
Amy Winehouse tragically passed away at 28-year-old in 2011. Per NME, a biopic about her life was first announced in 2018 when her father Mitch said, “we now feel able to celebrate Amy’s extraordinary life and talent. And we know through the Amy Winehouse Foundation that the true story of her illness can help so many others who might be experiencing similar issues.”
He added, “what we want is somebody to portray Amy in the way that she was… the funny, brilliant, charming and horrible person that she was. I wouldn’t mind betting it would be an unknown, young, English–London, Cockney–actress who looks a bit like Amy.”
We’re not entirely sure if Millie Bobby Brown looks like Amy Winehouse exactly, but if her role in Enola Holmes tells us anything, she certainly might have the range.
