Rumour has it that the incredible Lady Gaga is continuing to pursue her acting career, this time playing the iconic Ursula in The Little Mermaid live-action remake.
And while Gaga is an absolutely amazing actress, the casting has caused a lot of backlash.
Many people online are arguing that Ursula is a “fat girl icon”, and shouldn’t be played by her. Journalist Amanda Richards even wrote on InStyle how much Ursula meant to her growing up, as “she wasn’t the meek, shrinking violet, hide in the corner with a cardigan on kind of fat, either—she was glamorous, she was sexy, and she did not give a single solitary f*ck.”
People believe it would be a disservice to take this amazing role away from a plus-size actor.
Other people believe a black woman should play Ursula, as her mannerisms are inspired by black culture. For example, “her raspy voice, that ‘innit’ [and] her curves.”
However, it’s important to remember that right now the cast is just as rumour, as Nerdist reports.
According to them, the official casting hasn’t even started.
