Harry Styles just made career history with his first song to make number one on the Billboard Charts. Overnight, Billboard announced that Mr. Styles’s “Watermelon Sugar” single from his album Fine Line had become the number one sold and second most streamed track of the week.
And all we can say is it’s about damn time our king was given the treatment he deserves.
The track blew up over the last week after the hashtag #WatermelonSugarDay, coinciding with National Watermelon Day, trend on the 3rd of August, followed by a “lost tour visual” clip and official behind the scenes video of the beloved music video “dedicated to touching.” And, intriguingly, it eclipsed Taylor Swift’s “cardigan,” which previously debuted at number one and now sits at number eight.
“As Styles achieves his first Hot 100 No. 1, he surpasses his prior best rank, earned when “Sign of the Times” debuted and peaked at No. 4 in April 2017,” according to Billboard. “In his other top 10 visit as a soloist, “Adore You” reached No. 6 this April.”
Soon after the news broke, the hashtags, #ProudOfHarry and #CongratulationsHarry, began trending at number one and five worldwide respectively. Fans quickly began to share their favourite moments of our favourite former One Direction member, comparing his success to the same bright-eyed, curly haired, 16-year-old X-Factor UK contestant who worked at a bakery all those years ago…
Model Ephrata, who appeared in the “Watermelon Sugar” music video, tweeted in commemoration of Styles’s achievement.
Harry Styles joins Zayn Malik as the second former One Direction member to hit number one on Billboard’s Top 100. Malik reigned in at number one with “Pillowtalk” when it debuted in February, 2016.
