There has been a lot of controversy surrounding Fantastic Beasts: Crimes of Grindelwald, including the casting of Johnny Depp as Grindelwald, the fact that Nagini is an Asian actress, and now, how they will represent Dumbledore as gay.
Fans have been pretty vocal about their concerns for how the movie will represent Dumbledore and Grindelwald’s relationship, and even director David Yates said in January that he wouldn’t be “explicitly gay”. Later, he changed his comments to say that he and Grindelwald would share “sensual moments” in the film.
Ezra also defending J.K Rowling. “I think it’s also really powerful to have characters who are fascinating, dynamic people, doing magical works in the world, and that the story does not only pertain to their sexuality,” he explained. “People have to also take a moment and acknowledge the gift that Jo Rowling gave us by writing one of the greatest characters in literary history, one of the most beloved characters across the whole spectrum of civil society, and the beliefs and ideologies there; one of the most beloved characters; and then, at the end of writing that series, was like, ‘Oh, yeah, and he’s gay. What? Step to me.’ She is forever a god for that.”
To conclude, Ezra hit back at the haters.
“Why don’t you wait until you see the film before you start talking sh*t on Twitter?” he asked. “Do your own research. Make up your own mind. Follow your heart, and really, really investigate situations before you identify yourself and pick a side, and start throwing things at the opposition.”

Jude Law, who plays Dumbledore in the films, also opened up about the backlash in July. When he was asked about how the film would handle Dumbledore’s sexuality, he explained, “you’re just getting to know Albus in the film,” and that “we learn a little about his past in the beginning of this film, and characters and their relationships will unfold naturally which I’m excited to reveal.”
