Self-proclaimed feminist, Elizabeth Banks has sort of unintentionally angered people everywhere, after making a comment during an award acceptance speech.
While accepting the award from Women in Film, she took the opportunity to call out respected movie director Steven Spielberg for his lack of women-led films.
“I went to Indiana Jones and every movie Steven Spielberg ever made, and by the way, he’s never made a movie with a female lead,” she began, according to The Wrap.
“Sorry, Steven. I don’t mean to call your a** out, but it’s true.”
But, unfortunately, she forgot that Steven has directed a female-led movie, The Color Purple, and it starred many gorgeous black actresses too, like Whoopi Goldberg, Oprah Winfrey and Margaret Avery.
Fans were mad that she dismissed a movie that was so important, and was even nominated for several Academy Awards.
It’s backlash that we’re sure Elizabeth didn’t expect, but it does raise an interesting point that the movie with an African American lead wasn’t on her radar.
Yikes.
Since the blunder, she has posted an apology online. It reads:
“I messed up. When referring to Steven Spielberg at the Women in Film awards, I framed my comments about his films inaccurately. I want to be clear from the start that I take full responsibility for what I said and I’m sorry.
“When I made the comments, I was thinking of recent films Steven directed, it was not my intention to dismiss the import of the iconic #TheColorPurple. I made things worse by giving the impression that I was dismissing Shari Belfonte when she attempted to correct me.
“I spoke with Shari backstage and she was kind enough to forgive me. Those who have the privilege and honor of directing and producing films should be held to account for our mistakes, whether it’s about diversity or inaccurate statements. I’m very sorry.
