We just got our very first look at Camilla Cabello as Cinderella

Apparently the step-mother played by Idina Menzel is not going to be evil in this version!

Despite everything, the show is going on in the world of TV and film. Amidst the pandemic, the Riverdale cast has returned to set, Emmy winner Zendaya has filmed and produced a whole movie called Malcolm and Marie, and Harry Styles is in talks to star in a new bisexual period flick. Over the weekend, we got another update on a highly anticipated film: the live-action remake of Cinderella starring Camila Cabelo as the titular princess herself.

In case you somehow missed it, the live-action remake of Cinderella is on its way and is shaping up to be very different from the Disney original. This film is notably *not* a Disney offering like the recent Mulan, but is being produced by Sony instead. The cast of the new Cinderella film includes fashion icon Billy Porter as a genderless Fairy godmother and broadway legend Idina Menzel as the stepmother.

Yep, notably not the evil stepmother. In a new photo posted by the film’s director Kay Cannon, we’ve just been given our first look at Cabello in her new role. The director shared the snap which sees herself, Cabello and Menzel wrapped up in warm coats, presumably between shooting scenes. “Revelling the time I have left shooting w/ Cinders, [Camila Cabello] & her NOT evil stepmother, [Idina Menzel] (there are no villains in this movie ❤️),” Cannon captioned her post.

Cabello shared the director’s post to her own Instagram story, tagging her co-stars, the director and writing, “I love this film so much.” Now, we can’t see too much of their costumes under the coats, but we are loving the relaxed long braid Cabello’s sporting and Menzel’s curls piled atop her head. Judging from the taupe fabric under her camo coat, we think we’re looking at a pre-transformation, still possibly serving as a down-trodden housemaid version of Cabello’s character in this picture.

There are also some new pictures of Cabello in what looks like her Cinderella costume, seemingly mid-song! Cabello, a singer by trade, is playing a bit part in shaping the film’s music. With her braid and bodice, she looks every bit the part!

It’s been speculated that Cabello’s Cuban and Mexican heritage might play a role in the modern adaptation of the classic fairytale. Reinterpretations of princess films are something we’re seeing more and more, and we love this trend. The others we’re most excited for? Yara Shadidi taking on the sparkly role of Tinkerbell in the new Peter Pan and Wendy, Halle Bailey as Ariel in The Little Mermaid, and potentially Ariana Grande as Meg in a remake of Hercules.
