Lili Reinhart is candid about a lot of things: her body image, her mental health, her bisexuality. However, the Riverdale actress has recently taken to Twitter to set the record straight about something she’s kept very private: her on-off relationship and subsequent break up with Cole Sprouse.
In a recent interview, the actress opened up about her mental health, speaking about a dark time in her life. She explained that she felt like she was in a “black tunnel [that] was never going to end,” and of course, a tonne of people took this to be about her breakup with Sprouse. The actress has notably not spoken about their break up, so this would be a bit out of character.
“I couldn’t see the light. I was like, ‘I feel like I’m dying.’ It was f**king rough, and there’s no other way through it than just through it,” she shared. “I’ve seen a lot of people when it comes to heartache and grief and breakups, and they try to get that void filled with sex, with coke, with food, with drinking, [but] the void is still there. I took the road less travelled and just dealt with my s**t. I had to face my own pain head-on.”
Sprouse and Reinhart were together for about three years, before parting ways earlier this year.
“The last couple of months have probably [been] the most emotional few months of my entire life,” the 23-year-old told Refinery29. “And my therapist [told] me, ‘Your body’s going through withdrawal from love. You’re used to having this exchange of happy chemicals between you and the person that you’re with.’ In moments of my life, I have dropped every ounce of pride that I had just to be like, ‘Love me. Please take the pain away for a day, a second, an hour,’ just so I can feel that fix again.”
Throughout the interview, and in many of her own posts, Reinhart has been incredibly open about her mental health. It’s something that’s especially commendable during a time when so many of us are struggling with it. While we obviously don’t know the context and what else she shared, we can imagine that Reinhart would have been speaking about her mental health overall, not just spilling her guts about her ex BF.
“Quotes taken from my most recent interview are not about a ‘breakup.’ They are about the depression I’ve felt over these last few months. Tired of people taking my words out of context and piecing together their own story for clickbait,” she wrote on Twitter. “I would never speak so candidly about something as personal as a breakup. That’s incredibly private. I was addressing my depression.”
Thankfully, the rest of the piece is a really beautiful dive into Reinhart’s mind and how she’s working on changing not only herself but trying to better the industry that she’s in.
