In the latest episode of the Lana Del Rey Instagram saga, the “Young and Beautiful” singer has once again defended her recent controversial comments on Instagram.
The original post claimed she’s ‘paved the way’ for artists Beyoncé, Ariana Grande and Doja Cat (among several others) to sing about “being sexy, wearing no clothes, f*cking, cheating,” while the world condemned her for doing the exact same thing.
After a follow up Instagram post suggesting that she had a falling out with “Don’t Call Me Angel” co-artist and friend Ariana Grande, the “Summertime Sadness” has shared a lengthy IG video addressing the whole controversy.
“I don’t want to beat a dead horse and go on and on about this post, but I just want to remind you that in that post—my one and only personal declaration I’ve ever made, thanks for being so warm and welcoming—was about the need for fragility in the feminist movement,” she said.
“And when I mentioned women who look like me, I didn’t mean white like me, I mean the kind of women who, y’know, [people] might not believe because they think, ‘oh, look at her, she deserves it,’ there’s a lot of people like that [out there].”
“I’m sorry I didn’t add one Caucasian—one hundred percent Caucasian women—to the people that I admire, but it says more about you than it does about me,” she continued. “I think it’s interesting that the very first time I try to tell you something about my life or that I’m writing books that chronicle that fragility, that 200,000 hateful, spiteful comments come in…Comments like ‘you f***ing white b***h’.”
“The difference is when I get on the pole people think I’m a w**re, but when [FKA] Twigs gets on the pole, it’s art… I’m reminded constantly by my friends that lyrically there are layers and complicated psychological factors that play into some of my songwriting.”
Del Rey, who mentioned that she’s been met with a rife amount of hate because of her comments, admitted that her phone number has also been leaked.
It should go without saying that harassing someone is never okay, and online harassment is just as bad. Just because you aren’t physically near the person targeted or aren’t verbally insulting them, doesn’t mean the harm these sort of comments can have on a person and their mental health isn’t equally as damaging. And, no matter how you interpret Del Rey’s original comments, that’s no excuse to outright cyberbully her, use violent and misogynistic language, share her personal details or dox her.
Anyway, adding more fuel to the rumour that she and Ari broke-up their friendship over the post, she said, “I’m sorry that a couple of the girls I talked to that were mentioned in that post have super different opinions to my insight, especially because we’ve been so close for so long.”
“I just want to say the culture is super sick right now,” she said. “The fact that [people] want to turn my posts, my advocacy for fragility, to a race war is really bad. It’s actually really bad.”
“I’m not the enemy. I’m definitely not a racist. Nobody gets to tell your story except for you and that’s what I’m going to do. God bless and f**k off if you don’t like the post.”
