Kim Kardashian West opens up about Kanye West’s mental health, asks for compassion

“He is a brilliant but complicated person.”

Keeping Up With The Kardashians star Kim Kardashian West has opened up about her husband and U.S. presidential candidate Kanye West’s mental health.

Yesterday, according to People, Kanye West made a series of (now deleted) tweets yesterday claiming that Kim and his mother-in-law Kris Jenner were trying to have a doctor “lock me up.”

“Kim was trying to fly to Wyoming with a doctor to lock me up like [in] the movie Get Out because I cried about saving my daughter’s life yesterday,” the 43-year-old Yeezy rapper tweeted. “Kriss [Jenner] don’t play with me[,] you and that calmye are not allowed around my children. Y’all tried to lock me up.”

In response, Kim shared a message on her Instagram Stories about her husband and his mental health, acknowledging that he had bipolar disorder and asking for people to have some compassion for him.

“As many of you know, Kanye has bi-polar disorder,” she said, according to CNN. “Anyone who has this or has a loved one in their life who does, knows how incredibly complicated and painful it is to understand.”

“I’ve never spoken publicly about how this has affected us at home because I am very protective of our children and Kanye’s right to privacy when it comes to his health. But today, I feel like I should comment on it because of the stigma and misconceptions about mental health.”

She then went on to say that she knows “Kanye is subject to criticism because he is a public figure and his actions at times can cause strong opinions and emotions,” but he is a “brilliant but complicated person,” who has been through the “painful loss of his mother,” “pressures of being an artist and a black man,” and “the pressure and isolation that is heightened by his bipolar disorder.”

Kim’s comments follow the controversial presidential candidate’s recent campaign rally, where he disclosed, allegedly without Kim’s permission, that he and Kim considered getting an abortion when they found out Kim was pregnant with their eldest daughter, North, 7.

According to a source, via People, Kim was “furious” with her husband for bringing up North at the campaign rally. Her main concern is how his comments may affect their four children—North, 7, Saint, 4 and a half, Chicago, 2 and a half, Psalm, 14 months.

“She loves her kids tremendously and wants to protect them,” the source told the outlet. “Her favourite thing in the world is being a mum.”

Yet, in her recent message on her Instagram Stories, she acknowledged that “those who are close with Kanye know his heart and understand his words sometimes do not align with his intentions.”
