“Roar” singer Katy Perry has shared her support for Ellen DeGeneres, in light of several claims The Ellen DeGeneres Show is a toxic workplace and that the beloved host is difficult to work with.
In case you missed it, last month, employees at Ellen DeGeneres’s talk show opened up about their experience with racism, bullying, favouritism and intimidation on the show. Then, more and more people came forward about their experience with the 62-year-old comedian turned daytime host. Soon after, fans began petitioning for others to take over the hosting duty, from Dakota Johnson to Wanda Sykes.
And now, Katy Perry is seemingly donning the clown get-up from her upcoming album once again and defending DeGeneres. As she sees it, while she “can’t speak for anyone else’s experience besides [her] own,” she has “only ever had positive takeaways from [her] time with Ellen…” as a guest.
“I know I can’t speak for anyone else’s experience besides my own but I want to acknowledge that I have only ever had positive takeaways from my time with Ellen & on [the show],” she tweeted. “I think we all have witnessed the light & continual fight for equality that she has brought to the world through her platform for decades. Sending you love & a hug, friend.”
Soon after Perry’s comments, fans quickly pointed out that her experience as an A-list celebrity guest on the show doesn’t relate to the experience of working with Ellen as an employee. And, that her comments risk invalidating their experience and workplace trauma.
“You’re rich and well known, Katy,” wrote one user. “You may have had [a] positive experience but her staff and co-workers have spoken out on how they are mistreated. You can’t just invalidate their experience and feelings.”
“Her staff are treated like they’re worth nothing,” added another. “I love you so much, but your comment is disregarding their experiences. Don’t forget you’re Katy Perry, of course you’re going to be treated well.”
Others, in an attempt to save their fave’s reputation, are claiming that the Smile artist was hacked, which it seems is now becoming an internet meme.
