If your relationship has been a little strained during coronavirus isolation, you’re not alone. After the sad confirmation of Cole Sprouse and Lili Reinhart’s break up yesterday, a new detail has emerged. Apparently, Sprouse and Reinhart’s split was pretty much directly caused by the quarantine.
According to a source speaking to People, the on-again-off-again couple didn’t do too well quarantining apart. “Lili and Cole were in a good place when Riverdale was shut down due to the coronavirus outbreak, but they isolated separately and distance has never been a good thing for their relationship,” said the source.
Apparently, what this on- and off-screen Riverdale couple need to be good together, is, well, to be good together. The source explained, “When Cole and Lili are around each other often, things are very good. Their relationship is very intimate and affectionate, but things become much more complicated when they’re apart.”
Another source agreed, saying, “Distance is never good for their relationship. They decided not to quarantine together and knew off the bat that it wasn’t going to work. They both know their communication is better when they are together in person, and it just wasn’t working.”
The past few months have been slightly rocky for the couple. Earlier in the year rumours circulated that Sprouse was cheating on Reinhart with model Kaia Gerber—that he swiftly took down on Instagram in the most Cole Sprouse way imaginable.
Reinhart also clapped back against the rumours and the general toxicity that sometimes rears its head in online fandoms and on Twitter with her own posts.
Don’t worry though, if you’re a fan of Sprouse’s dream portraits of Reinhart they may not be done for yet. With a Riverdale season five still forthcoming, Sprouse and Reinhart are gonna have plenty of time to reunite and rekindle.
A source told E! That this probably isn’t where the tumultuous love story ends. “They know they will likely reconcile once filming resumes,” said the source, “Both aren’t interested in dating other people, just using this time to chill and focus on themselves.”
The source explained that the pair “have this fiery attraction to one another that always seems to bring them back together,” and, whoa. Sounds like their fellow Riverdale castmate Skeet Ulrich may have been selling it short and keeping it G-rated when he said that “they were a very cute couple.”
