Amidst the many sad losses we’ve faced this year, Glee actress Naya Rivera’s tragic passing is still reverberating. In a recent interview, rapper Big Sean has spoken on the record about his track “I Don’t F**k With You.” The track is a very swear-heavy song that pretty much everyone interprets as being a diss track about his late ex, Rivera.
After Vulture asked if he regretted making the song, Sean spoke about how he’s still dealing with her loss. “That’s a tough question to answer because I’m still processing a lot of that … I don’t feel comfortable talking about it because I want to respect her. She’s made such an impact on people, and she’s done so many great things in her life and her career that it was hurtful to even have that [song] be associated with her.”
However, he did clarify that it wasn’t a diss track, but rather in good nature. Yes, even with the lyrics, “I heard you got a new man, I see you takin’ a pic / Then you post it up, thinkin’ that it’s makin’ me sick.” Tbh, that makes a lot of sense. Rivera herself even performed the song on during a Lipsync Battle appearance after all.
“It wasn’t a diss to her. I truly made the song and played it for her. She knew about it, and she liked it. We had a breakup that was very public, and we were young and we forgave each other and moved on from that,” explained Sean. That said, he did add, “If I would have known something this tragic would have happened, I would have never made the song.”
The rapper and Rivera were previously engaged between 2013 and 2014, but ultimately went their separate ways. Sean wrote a touching tribute for Rivera following her passing.
“Rest In Peace Naya, God Bless your Soul!,” he captioned the Instagram post. “Thank you for blessing us all with your talent and presence. you are a hero! Not just because of how you saved your son, also because of the barriers you knocked down for so many people to make them feel confident in themselves and to stand tall and be proud when they couldn’t achieve that on their own.”
Rivera is survived by her four-year-old son Josey, who the Glee creators have vowed to make a college fund for.
