Euphoria is the new HBO drama that stars our queen B Zendaya, however, it’s already caused quite a stir online.

The series premieres on Foxtel this Monday, and will follow a group of high school kids “as they navigate love and friendships in a world of drugs, sex, trauma, and social media.”

So what is the big deal?

Well, there are concerns that the content isn’t very teen. Hollywood Reporter claims that one episode shows “close to 30 penises flash onscreen” while another has a scene where a person “commits statutory rape with a 17-year-old trans girl”.

Tim Winter, the Parent Television Council president has released a statement about the show, saying the content is far too adult for its intended audience.

“HBO, with its new high school centred show Euphoria, appears to be overtly, intentionally, marketing extremely graphic adult content — sex, violence, profanity and drug use — to teens and preteens.”

However, HBO’s programming president Casey Bloys says that the show isn’t “sensational just to be sensational”, and actually follows the real-life experiences of creator Sam Levinson.

“It may seem boundary-pushing, and the idea of putting them on TV may be, but somebody lived them.”

Apparently, HBO has pushed back on some intense scenes that feature a birth scene that shows a graphic close-up of a vagina.

Ok then.
