From Disney’s first-ever gay character to some sneaky easter eggs, the live-action Beauty and the Beast remake has given us so many amazing gifts!
Now, the one question everyone has been pining over since the original film has finally been answered: how did Belle’s mum die?
The 1991 classic never revealed anything about her mother’s fate or much about Belle’s childhood, which is probably why scriptwriters decided to introduce some backstory in the new version.
SPOILER ALERT
In an entirely new scene, the Enchantress has left an atlas in the Beast’s castle which can transport the reader’s mind (not body) to anywhere they want.
The Beast uses it to take Belle to her childhood home in Paris, where they see a doctor wearing beaked mask, which were used in 17th century to treat patients affected by the bubonic plague. That’s when we learn that Belle’s mum died from the infection and begged husband Maurice to leave with their daughter to avoid the Black Death.
Omg that’s so sad! At least we know now but we kinda wish we didn’t. Where them tissues at?!
