Euphoria star Barbie Ferreira and Five Feet Apart actress Haley Lu Richardson are starring in a movie together. And not only does it look hilarious and heartwarming, but touches on a very important issue: abortion laws.
Buckle up folks, this looks like it’ll be a bit of a bumpy ride.
Unpregnant is a dark comedy coming of age film from the producers of Riverdale about two teenage girls who go on a road trip from Missouri to New Mexico to get one of them an abortion without her parents or boyfriend knowing.
As Teen Vogue explains, abortion laws are extremely restrictive in the American state of Missouri. According to Guttmatcher, via Teen Vogue, “the state requires a 72-hour waiting period between appointments, mandatory counseling sessions, parental consent and notification, and bans both telemedic abortion and procedures on patients whose pregnancies have passed viability.”
So, as a teen girl from a religious and conservative family, Veronica (Haley Lu Richardson), who discovers she’s accidentally pregnant, it’s impossible to have an abortion without your parents’ knowledge. Which, as the trailer shows, is where her former best friend Bailey comes in.
The two embark on a wild road trip, are on the run with the police, watch a beautiful night’s sky in the desert and try to muster up the courage to jump on a moving train (and evidently prove not to do it). And, as the trailer seems to suggest, the pair may mend their rocky friendship along the way.

In a recent Instagram post about the film, Ferreira shared her excitement for “my very first movie w[ith] a true angel, Haley Lu!! Get ready for tears [‘]n[‘] laughs and all the good stuff in between.”
Unpregnant releases on HBO’s streaming service on the 10th of September. Currently, there’s no word on an Aussie release but most HBO films and TV shows stream over on Foxtel Go. And, for all you Euphoria fans, Zendaya just gave an update to season 2 and when we can expect new episodes.
