After producing the hit Netflix series 13 Reasons Why and upcoming film The Broken Hearts Gallery, Selena Gomez is heading to the Scream franchise… at least, according to this fan theory. And, not gonna lie, it sounds pretty legit.
As first reported by Buzzfeed, fans recently noticed that a number of Scream 5’s confirmed cast just followed Gomez on social media. You star Jenny Ortega and Scream icons Courteney Cox and David Arquette all followed her on Instagram, and Scream 5 directors Matthew Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillet (Ready Or Not) recently hit the follow button over on Twitter.
All pretty normal stuff when you’re a big name singer, songwriter, actress and amateur chef with 189 million followers, right? Well, that is until Cox commented on a recent post on Gomez’s instagram with a super cryptic (and now deleted) message basically confirming the news.
“This looks fun!” Cox replied to a post about Selena’s new cooking show, which even ex Justin Bieber is watching. “I can’t wait to meet you.”
While this may confirm that Selena Gomez is starring in the new film in the Scream franchise, we have no idea what kinda role she’ll play in the upcoming flick.
Some fans think that Selena may be the classic trope character who shockingly dies in the opening scene—but if that were true, it wouldn’t make much sense that Cox would get to meet her on set. So, as other fans are alluding to, this might mean that if Selena is in Scream 5, she might have a pretty big role.
Congrats Selena! Now all we’re asking is for her to make it through the film alive. Please Matthew and Tyler, save our Animal Crossing queen.
According to Variety, Scream 5 is expected to release in 2021, a full 25 years since the first film debuted. Production is said to start in the coming weeks so we’ll know whether Selena Gomez really is in it soon.
