Whether you’ve already binge-watched all 13 episodes or not, it seems like everyone has an opinion on 13 Reasons Why.
Some have praised the hit Netflix series for tackling such difficult issues while others are slamming it for glorifying suicidal behaviour. New Zealand even created a brand new rating to stop teens under the age of 18 from watching it without a parent.

Now Executive Producer Selena Gomez has spoken out about all the controversy and turns out that’s kinda what she was hoping for.
“We stayed very true to the book and that’s initially what [author] Jay Asher created, was a beautifully tragic, complicated yet suspenseful story, and I think that’s what we wanted to do,” she told the Associated Press.
“We wanted to do it justice and, yeah, that’s going to come no matter what. It’s not an easy subject to talk about, but I’m very fortunate with how it’s doing. I’m overwhelmed. I’m very proud of it.”
In another interview with E! News, Sel admitted that that she is “very surprised” about the show’s success so far.
“I believed in the project for so long and I understood what the message was,” she explained. “I just wanted it to come across in a way that kids would be frightened, but confused — in a way that they would talk about it because it’s something that’s happening all the time. So, I’m overwhelmed that’s it’s doing as well as it’s doing.”
So there you. Selena is sticking by her passion project no matter what criticism comes her way.
