Our first look at the next film in the beloved To All The Boys series is finally here and while we’ve never been happier to see Lara Jean and Peter Kavinsky, it looks like true love isn’t going so smoothly in the third film. In support of the Black Lives Matter civil rights movement, Lana Condor and Noah Centineo teamed up for an hour-long charity live stream that was hosted by Centineo’s very own organisation Favoured Nations. As well as hearing from important Black educators and activists, we got a sneak peek of To All the Boys: Always and Forever, Lara Jean which involved Peter asking Lara to their prom. (!!!)
Condor and Centineo are all jokes before they do the read-through of the script, but pretty much as soon as they switch into their characters we can tell something’s not quite right between our favourite fictional teen couple. The scene is set back at the diner, which is a sweet throwback to the first film where many of their first fake dates happened in the first To All The Boys film.
Peter orders blueberry pancakes, but Lara Jean says she’s not that hungry. First sign of trouble. Then it seems like he congratulates her on some kind of acceptance, possibly to college? “I thought you’d get in, but I was honestly a little nervous about what would happen if you didn’t,” he says to her. She responds without her usual pep, saying “Yeah, totally,” and continuing, “Listen, Peter, there’s something that I need to tell you.”
What. Is. She. Going. To. Say.
Unfortunately, because Peter is Peter, and sometimes a bit of an oblivious boy, he blazes on over her, orders whipped cream and starts reminiscing about their first fake date at the diner. “Do you remember the first time we came here Lara Jean? … You were wearing a blue jacket and a little dress, and you called me on my shit. And I knew right then that I was falling in love with you.” Goddammit, Peter, so freakin’ sweet. 🥺
“I couldn’t think of a better place to ask you, so, Lara Jean Covey: Will you go to prom with me?” Peter finally asks. Lara Jean says yes, happily but very quickly changes the subject. What does it all mean?
After the actors finish the scene Condor notes that something is definitely going on. “There’s some discord. I don’t really know if Peter is picking up what Lara Jean is putting down,” Condor mused.
Once you’re done replaying this particular clip, the rest of the live stream is also some pretty powerful watching. Gen-Z activist and the president of Black Lives Matter Great New York Nupol Kiazolu talks about how action against racial injustice goes further than the current wave of activism. The cast also speak with Black Lives Matter co-founder Patrisse Cullors about how young people can contribute to the Black Lives Matter movement.
