Music groups bicker all the time, but things are different when your band-mates are also your brothers, as shown in documentary Chasing Happiness, which charts the rise and fall and rise again of Kevin, Joe and Nick Jonas.
Until the recent release of chart-topper ‘Sucker’, the siblings were never as big in Australia as elsewhere, but thanks to plenty of footage of screaming fans and arena concerts, it’s clear just how much of a phenomenon they were in the US, to the point where the trio became burnt out and unable to stand each other.
Working incredibly long days and, by their own admission, never wanting to say no to anything, the success they achieved almost made things worse, because it meant the pressure never stopped. Until the trio splintered.
What makes this more than just a publicity piece for comeback album Happiness Begins – which, of course, it is – is how candidly the brothers talk about their struggles. They really don’t hold back.
From the flak they got for those purity rings to the resentment they’ve had towards each other at times, this is as much a therapy session as a nostalgic dance down memory lane. (On Amazon Prime Video from Tue., Jun. 4) 3.5 stars
