Not too long ago, Instagram and Snapchat introduced GIF stickers by pairing with Giphy.
The feature has become many users favourite function on the app, however, it has been short-lived.
Both platforms have had to disable the feature after users discovered a highly racist GIF that was making the rounds over the weekend. The GIF read, “N**** Crime Death Counter — Keep Cranking Bonzo, the Numbers Just Keep on Climbing!
The GIF was first noticed on Snapchat, so they were first to take action with a spokesperson telling TechCrunch that they disabled the feature, waiting “for Giphy’s team to take a look at it.”
Not long after, people were noticing it on Instagram too. They quickly took down the feature, and also told TechCrunch that they had “stopped integration with Giphy as they investigate the issue.”
As for Giphy, their community guidelines state that it doesn’t allow anything with Hate Speech, but somehow this one got through. A spokesperson told Engadget.com that the image got through due to a bug in its content moderation filters. They have since fixed the issue.
“A user discovered an offensive GIF sticker in our library, and we immediately removed it per our content guidelines.
“After investigation of the incident, this sticker was available due to a bug in our content moderation filters specifically affecting GIF stickers. We have fixed the bug and have re-moderated all of the GIF stickers in our library.
“The GIPHY staff is also further reviewing every GIF sticker by hand and should be finished shortly.
“We take full responsibility for these recent events and sincerely apologise to anyone who was offended.”
