The best singers in Hollywood have songwriters throwing tracks at them left, right and centre and it’s obvs impossible to choose all of them, so sometimes they reject songs that go on to become major hits.
The latest example is Camila Cabello and Demi Lovato who both recorded then rejected Zedd’s hit song “The Middle” which ultimately went to Maren Morris.
Variety reports that both Demi and Camila passed on the track for the same reason.
“Demi really liked it but Sarah [Aarons, writer] was not happy with the verse,” Monsters & Strangerz’s Stefan Johnson shared.
After a re-cut record, producers admit that Demi “sounded awesome and we were really hyped on it, but then we didn’t hear anything after a couple weeks and other people were hitting us up about the song, so we asked: ‘Is this gonna be a single for Demi?’”
At the time, Demi was in the midst of selecting her new single, with the choice of “The Middle” and “Sorry Not Sorry”, and she obvs went with the latter.
“Demi thought it was too pop, she’s trying to go more soulful and urban. We were super bummed,” they added.
The song was then handed over to Camila and her version was “incredible”, Stefan says.
“I sent Camila a text about it, and she’s usually very responsive, and there was no reply. So I’m, like, what’s going on?”
This went down last September when Cammy’s “Havana” was blowing up around the world and that’s when they find out that “Camila’s out. She doesn’t want any song to overshadow ‘Havana’.”
“Sorry Not Sorry” and “Havana” are two of the greatest pop songs of the last decade (don’t even @ us!) so we’re happy with the girls’ decision!
