Netflix has a new original period drama coming and it sounds right up Jane Austen fans’ and Upper East Side’s alley.
Bridgerton is an adaptation of Julia Quinn’s best-selling novel series, following the eight siblings of the Bridgerton family as they each search for ~true love~.
Per Netflix’s synopsis, the series closely follows “Daphne Bridgerton, the eldest daughter of the Bridgerton family, as she makes her debut onto Regency London’s competitive marriage market,” oh my! “As her pursuit of love unravels, the high society scandal sheet written by the mysterious Lady Whistledown casts criticisms on Daphne who has caught the eye of London’s most desirable duke.”
So you mean to tell me there’s a Jane Austen-esque romp in the pursuit of marriage, narrated by a Regency-era Gossip Girl who knows everyone’s secrets? Sign us up!
Bridgerton marks the first series in a $150m Netflix deal with Grey’s Anatomy and Scandal creator Shonda Rhimes. It also, refreshingly, stands out as a period piece featuring characters of colour. Another period-piece series from earlier this year, The Great starring Elle Fanning and Nicholas Hoult, is one other super fun example.
The new Netflix series debuts on the 25th of December but you can catch the first trailer below.
