Ladies, gentlemen and every gorgeous human being in between, it’s that time of year where we celebrate love, our identity and sexual and gender diversity—y’know when we’re not everyday—it’s Mardi Gras!
WATCH: Dua Lipa performs at 2020 Mardi Gras in Sydney to crowd of fans.
While the first Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras in 1978 was a brave moment of marginalised queer people marching in protest against the criminalisation of homosexuality, the protest has evolved into a near-month-long festive celebration of the LGBTQIA+ community, culminated on the final day at the parade.
But, thanks to COVID-19, this year’s MG hits differently. Instead of the crowds of people gathered on Oxford St, the event is being held at the Sydney Cricket Ground (sport? In my queer community? It’s more likely than you think.), with the cast of RuPaul’s Drag Race Down Under to be revealed on the show grounds—and special guests Rita Ora, Montaigne, Electric Fields and Girlfriend fave G-Flip.
So, whether you’ve got front row seats to the parade, are celebrating in a COVID-safe venue or from your rural small-town home, here’s all the essential party pieces you need to pull off every colour in the rainbow 🌈.
