Nostalgia is the currency we are investing in.

Of all the forgotten 2000s trends that have flung their way back into the zeitgeist, the phone charm is one of our favourites, and that’s because it’s totally cute and practical.

Back in the days of flip phones and Tamagotchis, phone charms were the de rigueur accessory to have dangling off your mobile.

It was fun because no one took them seriously. You could have a Hello Kitty or a Disney character as decoration, plus you could have as many as you like, and you could swap them out as you pleased.

Since the rise of the iPhone, we have only been concerned about our phone cases (like do you prefer them patterned, glittery or monochrome), and most people opt to choose one and roll with it until it breaks or they upgrade their phone.

In 2021, phone chains feature a range of baubles and charms that include clashing colours, shapes, and patterns. It’s like kawaii (cuteness) on steroids.

Unlike during the heyday of flip phones, these chains don’t have a pre-made hook to attach to on an iPhone, so instead it connects to the phone case.

Repeat nostalgia fashion offenders Dua Lipa, Miley Cyrus, Kaia Gerber and the Hadids have been showing off their chains on their Instagrams – and it’s making us want to raid their wardrobes EVEN MORE than we already did.

The trend is in the same league as butterfly clips, bubble rings and baguette bags, which are just a few of the kitschy trends from the 2000s that are back in style.

It’s a movement that no one could have predicted, and it’s hard to tell who is wearing these looks authentically and who are styling them with a hint of irony.

But we want to call it early! Phone chains are the best trend to make a comeback because they’re the most practical.
