Naya Rivera’s son Josey is ‘doing better every day’ following his mother’s tragic death

This is heartbreaking.

It’s been about a month since Glee actress and singer Naya Rivera’s tragic death from drowning was confirmed.

In that time, her fans, co-stars and friends have reflected on the heartbreaking loss and the incredible legacy that she leaves behind. Earlier this week one of Rivera’s closest friends, actress and dancer Heather Morris, shared an update on how she was mourning for her. And now, we also have an update on how Rivera’s young son Josey is coping.

According to a source close to the family, “this has been an unbelievably difficult time for her family and loved ones.” Rivera’s son is “doing better every day.”

Josey is living with his father and Rivera’s ex-husband, Ryan Dorsey, full time now. According to the source, Rivera’s sister, Nickayla, is very involved and spends a lot of time with her nephew. While he is young, Josey apparently understands that his mother is gone and that death is final.

According to the report, Dorsey has taken the loss hard but is prioritising his son throughout this. “Ryan’s whole world is Josey right now… [he] is still grieving and is very much struggling with the loss of Naya, but he stays strong and keeps going for the sake of his son.”

Apparently, the pair talk about Rivera every day. Dorsey and Rivera’s family want to ensure Josey has good memories of his mother and that she is still a big part of his life. The source shared that “Josey is a very strong boy and Naya would be very proud of him.”

It’s believed that in her last moments Rivera may have saved her four-year-old son Josey’s life, according to a report from the Ventura County Sheriff’s Department. The sheriff explained, “We know from speaking with her son that he and Naya swam in the lake together at some point during their journey.”

“It was during that time that her son described being helped into the boat by Naya who boosted him onto the deck from behind. He told investigators that he looked back and saw her disappear under the surface of the water.” The currents can be quite strong in the area they were in, which could indicate Rivera used the last of her strength to save her son.

It would be a harrowing thing for anyone to go through, let alone a four-year-old child. We’re glad that it sounds like he and Rivera’s family is doing okay.
