Joey King says she got Jacob Elordi’s ‘permission’ to call him out

Awkward...

People were pretty shaken when Aussie actor Jacob Elordi revealed that, not only is he not really a fan of the franchise, he hadn’t actually watched his own film, The Kissing Booth 2.

Joey King then called out her ex-boyfriend out on Twitter, only adding to the drama. Well, it just keeps going! King just revealed that she actually asked for Elordi’s ‘permission’ to call him out!

ICYMI, Elordi claimed that he hadn’t seen the film in a recent interview, prompting King to take to Twitter to clarify, “Jacob watched it. He’s capping.”

The tweet was then deleted, leading people to believe there may have been some drama. King set the record straight in a new interview. There is an important reason she took the tweet down, and it’s not because Elordi was hurt.

“‘Capping’ means lying. I heard the term ‘capping’ on, like, TikTok and Twitter and Instagram, and through friends, and I was like ‘I guess this is the new thing.’ Apparently it’s not. It’s something that I should not have used as a white person. I took it down… Two accounts on Twitter called me out for it. That’s why I deleted it.”

‘Capping’ is part of African-American Vernacular English or AAVE. AAVE is often used by non-Black people to add humour or a certain flair to their speech—it’s a form of cultural appropriation. The same words, when used by Black people, are often treated as not “proper English” or as a negative characteristic. It’s something that Black people must spend extra energy thinking about when in white spaces. We’re glad King acknowledged the error and quickly corrected it!

“People thought it was because I was like, ‘Oh no, I shouldn’t have said that about him,’” King explained further. She also cleared up her intentions around the tweet, saying it was “a jovial thing” that “wasn’t to be mean” to her ex.

“I was just like, ‘I know the Kissing Booth fans. They are always so curious about that tension of sorts… I know they’ll appreciate it,’” she explained. “That’s who it was for. It was for the fans to just be like, ‘Oh my God!’ And they were.”

The 21-year-old also confirmed that she “got Jacob’s permission” beforehand, and that it was “fine.”

King needed no permission, however, to post some pics from a recent magazine photo shoot. In them, the young actress poses topless with a bouquet of flowers covering her chest. They’re so pretty, make sure to swipe through them all below.
