You can now get free tampons and pads in Victoria schools

It's about bloody time!

It’s never fun when you’re out and about and Aunt Flo unexpectedly comes to town. But what’s even worse is when it happens at school!

Sure, you can always ask your squad whether they’ve got any spares, but what if they don’t? It’s not exactly like you can just leave in the middle of class to buy supplies when that suspicious ‘wet patch’ feeling strikes.

But if you happen to live in the state of Victoria, this dilemma is now a thing of the past.

Yesterday, their state government announced that as of next week, all Victorian schools will start supplying pads and tampons  — whether that’s primary or high school, public or private.

Girls will now be able to access the sanitary items free of charge in school toilets.

The initiative was promised by the Andrews government in May last year, as a way to reduce the stigma and embarrassment around periods (especially in primary schools) and reduce costs in homes.

“While getting your period is a normal part of life, for some young girls it can be a source of anxiety or embarrassment,” Minister for Women and Youth, Gabrielle William said in a statement.

Just like toilet paper or soap, sanitary products are a basic human right for menstruating females, so we say it’s about bloody time!

Advocacy groups all over the country are calling for the initiative to be rolled out nationwide, so hopefully it’s not long before we see this in school bathrooms all over Australia.
