If you weren’t too caught up in the fact that Kylie Jenner dropped a pregnancy bomb on the world yesterday, you would have noticed that the Super Bowl was happening in America.
Even if you’re not into sports, you must have heard about Justin Timberlake performing the half-time show, and absolutely killing it.
With old school hits like his, it was bound to be incredible, however there was one part of the show that got many fans talking… and not for good reasons.
Towards the end of his performance, JT took to his piano to do a Prince tribute. During it, a HUGE projection of Prince performing came to life. It was incredible, sure, but true Prince fans knew their idol would be looking down in horror.
Before the Super Bowl, there were rumours of a Prince hologram being present… with the game being in his hometown of Minneapolis and all.
In 1998, Prince had an interview with New York Times, where he pointed out how he would never want to be used as a hologram tribute after he passed away. He described it as “the most demonic thing imaginable” and “that’ll never happen to me.”
Author Brit Bennett tweeted on the day before the show, “Reanimating a dead black musician as a hologram, against his wishes, in order to make him perform for millions of white people is almost too obvious a metaphor for how this country consumes black art.”
Many fans shared similar sentiments.
Of course, there were others who found the tribute incredible.
