The Weeknd officially dropped his new album My Dear Melancholy, where he truly opens up about the heartbreak he experienced with both Bella Hadid and Selena Gomez.
However, what most people were focusing on was a particular lyric in “Call Out My Name”, which suggests that he was about to give a kidney to Selena.
As you know, Selena underwent a kidney transplant while she and Abel were still together (from her best friend Francia). However, the lyrics suggest the entire thing could have gone a lot differently.
“I almost cut a piece of myself for your life / Guess I was just another pit stop / ‘Til you made up your mind.”
Ouch.
We all are also aware of the fact that Selena evidently chose her ex, Justin Bieber over The Weeknd. Which explains the shady lyrics.
“We found each other / I helped you out of a broken place / You gave me comfort / But falling for you was my mistake,” he continues to sing.
But did he really consider giving Selena a kidney? We think the hell not.
According to Entertainment Tonight, “It’s just a lyric and he knew it would strum up attention and that people would interpret it exactly as they have, but he was never actually going to donate his kidney to Selena. Sure, he was her boyfriend at the time, so it perhaps crossed his mind to get tested to see if he was a match — which is incredibly rare — but it never got anywhere close to actually happening.”
“Selena would never, ever have asked him,” the site adds. “She wouldn’t have even wanted him to even entertain the idea! It was difficult enough for her to allow a lifelong friend to do it, but a new boyfriend? No way.”
“To be honest, they were never as intense as he’s making it seem,” the report continued. “The Weeknd was always much more concerned with his career than his relationship. Selena leaned on friends and family during the surgery more than anyone.”
A lyric is somethings just a lyric.
