Believe it or not, there was once a time when Sydney was known for its fun and vibrant nightlife.

Turning 18 meant hitting up the clubs in the city, taking approx 10,000 bathrooms selfies with your squad in the bathroom and doing a cheeky Maccas run on the way home.

Of course, that all changed in 2014 when the lockout laws came in and Sydney’s bar culture became the laughing stock of the country (stop bullying us, Melbourne!)

But now, it seems the city is about to return to its former glory because it’s been announced that the laws are expected to be scrapped for summer!

Currently, the law means that you can’t get into a club after 1.30 am or be served alcohol after 3 am.

But after a parliamentary inquiry, these rules will be expected to be axed in licensed venues in the Sydney CBD and Oxford street by the end of the year.

ATM, it looks like the restrictions will still remain in Kings Cross, though — as the committee feels the area still isn’t quite safe or tame enough to reverse the rules.

It’s expected that in the near future, they’ll also lift the rule that prohibit selling shots after midnight.

Now, it’s important to remember that the rules were brought in for a good reason — to keep us all safe.
But the committee chair, Liberal MLC Natalie Ward, said that the laws had already achieved what they intended to.

“Sydney is not the same city it was in 2014,” she said. “Safety and a vibrant night-time economy should not be, and are not, mutually exclusive.”

At the end of the day, your safety — and the safety of your girl gang — should always be the number one priority, and exercising moderation while drinking is always a good look.

But everyone over the drinking age deserves to let their hair down and have a fun night out in their city. After all, you’re only young once!

And if anything, we think reversing the lockout laws will help reduce going overboard at pre-drinks to try and get more in before the lockout cut-off.

Now, go forth and enjoy your hot girl summer, Sydney!
