Sarah Hyland has always been pretty open with her fans about her battle with kidney dysplasia, however, she has never been as candid regarding her mental health as her most recent interview with Self.

In the interview, she discussed how she contemplated suicide following her first kidney transplant failure.

Despite doctor’s best efforts, Sarah’s kidney transplant failure meant she had to get it removed in May 2017, and quickly needed another.

Thankfully, her brother turned out to be a match and offered his own kidney for her second transplant. However, the star had concerns taking it since her first transplant with her father’s kidney had failed.

“I was very depressed. When a family member gives you a second chance at life, and it fails, it almost feels like it’s your fault. It’s not. But it does,” Sarah said. “For a long time, I was contemplating suicide, because I didn’t want to fail my little brother like I failed my dad.”

Sarah began dating her current boyfriend Wells Adams just days before the second transplant, and he has been a major source of support during the entire process.

“He’s seen me at my worst,” she shared. “He was there through all of that. I think that’s why I feel the most beautiful in his eyes, because he still finds me beautiful after seeing all that.”

After her transplant in 2017, she has had a series of follow-up surgeries, 16 in total!

Kidney dysplasia, which can sometimes be referred to as multicystic dysplastic kidney, is a condition that occurs in the womb when one or both of a baby’s kidneys don’t develop correctly.
