We interrupt your usual Tuesday programming with a very important announcement: you can now send people a freakin’ laser show from your iPhone just by typing one simple phrase.
And what might that phrase be? Well, “Pew Pew” of course! — the unofficial sound of shooting lasers.
The people of the internet have been going absolutely nuts over this little iMessage trick which triggers a light show coming out of your text bubble.
It’s a strange-yet-amusing trick that serves many purposes.
Want to get your crush’ attention? Pew pew! (at worst, they reply WTF and you say ‘sorry, wrong number,’ at best, they’re impressed by your cool new trick and the convo flows)
Want to amuse your friends and family from afar? Pew pew!
Want to annoy your ex? Okay….probs don’t do that one, even if it would be kinda funny.
Turns out, you’ve actually been able to use this feature for a while, just nobody’s ever been bored enough to find it (what can we say, self-iso brings out strange things in people!)
It sits alongside a handful of other animations, like balloons that float up from the bottom of the screen if you wish someone a “happy birthday”, or colourful confetti falls if you type “congratulations”.
You can also add these effects manually by holding down the little blue arrow you hit to send which brings up a menu of options. But, that’s nowhere near as fun as typing Pew Pew!
Unfortunately, this feature is only available on iPhones, so Android users will just have to stick to boring, non-laser filled messages for now. Boo!
