Towards the end of Liam’s time in 1D, he started to receive criticism from the media, fans and haters alike for gaining weight.

Liam admits that his weight gain was a result of his unhealthy lifestyle.

“[I] Got to 13 stone [about 180 pounds], just eating crap. I got fat jibes, and it affects your head,” he admits.

“I have nothing to hide about it. As I say, it was like a musical university. We were pretty reckless, but I got it out of my system. I had my fun.”

Payne also opened up about his mental health battle, explaining how his love of music helped him to overcome his issues.

“We couldn’t go anywhere. It was just gig to hotel, gig to hotel. And you couldn’t sleep, because they’d still be outside,” he says.

“People were speaking to me about mental health in music the other day, and that’s a big issue. Sometimes you just need some sun, or a walk.”
