Calling all beauty goths, YouTube makeup mogul Jeffree Star just unveiled his new palette and eye shadow collection. And, while the palette itself looks intriguing, the name of the collection is stirring up a bit of controversy.
“Cremated: is a new Jeffree Star collection designed to create the “perfect smoky eye and soft gothic eye.” It features a mesmerising range of 24 gothic eye shadow palettes, including a metal grey and silver shade named after Wednesday Adams, a glitter pink bronze called After Life and a “liquid latex” looking shade called Angel Of Death.
From there, the Cremated collection also includes four new sets of shimmering silver and gothic toned lip gloss— Heaven’s Gate, Funeral Parlor, Coroner’s Kiss and Six Feet Under— a black marble travel bag, white marble makeup bag and Cremated-branded metal straw set.
A photoshoot for the collection was filmed at an actual cemetery and the whole aesthetic is very gothic and dark.
But, as some people argue on Twitter, it feels inappropriate to release a product called Cremated during a time when death and grief lingers on everyone’s minds and the world is met with an international pandemic that’s, as of writing, affected nearly five million people.
Ofc, a makeup collection doesn’t just happen overnight. According to the video description of the reveal video on Star’s YouTube channel, the Cremated collection was first created in September 2019, months before reports of the Covid-19 disease first emerged, and was originally planned to release in April. But, “the coronavirus has had the whole beauty industry and the whole entire planet SHOOK” so it’s had to be moved back to the 22nd of May.
“We were supposed to have a very gothic and dark Spring,” Star said in his video about the collection. Or, as we would’ve experienced it in Australia: a very gothic and dark Autumn and incoming winter. Jeffree Star has yet to comment.
