Demi Lovato’s mum recalls finding out about her overdose

This is heartbreaking.

In July this year, Demi Lovato was rushed to hospital after a drug overdose. While the world felt completely shocked by the news, nothing compares to how her mum felt.

Dianna De La Garza spoke to Newsmax TV, with Demi’s blessing, revealing how she found out about the overdose and what came after.

She began getting tonnes of messages from friends and family telling her they were praying for Demi and hoping she was okay, and at that point, she had no idea what was going on. It was then that Demi’s assistant Kelsey called her to tell her of the drug overdose, and that she needed to get to the hospital.

“It was something I never, ever expected to hear as a parent about any of my kids,” Dianna explained. “I said, ‘Is she okay?’ And she stopped for a second and she said, ‘She’s conscious, but she’s not talking.’ I knew at that point that we were in trouble.”

Dianna rushed to the emergency room with Demi’s older sister, Dallas Lovato, and younger sister, Madison De La Garza. They were shocked with Demi’s condition.

She recalls, “She just didn’t look good, at all. She was in bad shape, but I said to her, ‘Demi, I’m here. I love you.’ At that point, she said back to me, ‘I love you too.’ From that point on, I never allowed myself to ever think that things weren’t going to be okay.”

Doctors tried to stabilize Demi, but she faced complications that made her family think she wasn’t going to make it.

“We just didn’t know for two days if she was going to make it or not,” she explained. “I was very concerned, and I was trying to be strong for her and for her sisters and for my family back home. I just feel like the reason she’s alive today is because of the millions of prayers that went up that day.”

Diana now says that Demi is “doing really well” in rehab and is working toward her newfound sobriety.

“She’s happy, she’s healthy, she’s working on her sobriety, and she’s getting the help she needs. That in itself encourages me about her future and the future of our family.”
