Emma Stone is being called out for her Oscar’s speech

"Emma Stone really thought she was setting the world on fire."

Many celebrities have used the Oscars yesterday to talk up about the #MeToo & #Time’sUp movement and gender inequality in the industry.

One included Emma Stone, however many people have found that her comments have fallen flat, and highlighted her white feminism.

While presenting the award for Best Director, Emma said, “These four men and Greta Gerwig created their own masterpieces this year.”

Greta was the only female nominated in the category, alongside Paul Thomas Anderson, Guillermo Del Toro, Christopher Nolan and Jordan Peele.

She is also only the fifth woman to ever be nominated in that category. HOWEVER, Jordan Peele is only the 5th black man to be nominated in that category.

Many people believe that her comments were echoing similar ones that Natalie Portman made at the Golden Globes when introducing the same category. “And here all the all-male nominees.”

However, it fell flat as she was disregarding the importance of two men of colour.

Creator of #OscarsSoWhite April Reign pointed out what was wrong with Emma’s speech. “I’m not here for the participation trophies & partial credit some are so eager to give out. Emma Stone made a movie with Woody Allen, played a whitewashed character, and erased the importance of two men of colour in a category. But she identified a woman, so… yay?

“Intersectionality isn’t a thing that many white women do well. Emma Stone (and those applauding her) are prime examples.”

Although her comments have riled some people up, it’s also important to remember that Emma wasn’t attacking the other nominees. Everyone seems to be fighting the same fight in the industry right now, which is representation. With a similar goal, hopefully it can be achieved.

Empowering women and being a feminist is incredibly important, and Hollywood is starting to recognise that. However disregarding others will only cause back-pedalling.

Emma has yet to respond to the backlash.
