Last week, Potterheads were #blessed with a new teaser to the upcoming Fantastic Beasts, movie, along with the film title: Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald.
Epic.
The teaser showed the main cast all looking very ominous toward the camera, with the return of Newt, Tina, Grindelwald, Credence and co. plus a few new faces like Leta Lestrange (played by Zoë Kravitz) and of course, young Dumbledore (played by Jude Law).
There was major hype over the new characters, however a lot of attention was drawn towards Grindelwald still being played by Johnny Depp.
As the movie title suggests, the second installment will focus heavily around Grindelwald, meaning Johnny Depp will play a HUGE role in it.
During the first movie’s release, Johnny Depp was undergoing a domestic violence accusation from his ex-wife Amber Heard. Although he was never convicted or charged with a crime, it has still upset some fans that he is still holding onto this major role.
Many fans have pointed out that in Harry Potter, Dumbledore was replaced when Richard Harris passed away, and as writer Dan Schwartz pointed out, it shouldn’t be too hard to “recast an actor in this magical world where people disguise themselves and are canonically able to change faces.”
Neither Warner Bros. or Johnny Depp have yet to respond to the backlash.
