Who doesn’t love a selfie? Well, it was only a matter of time before science and selfies collided, and according to researchers at Brigham Young University there are #officially three different types of selfie takers.
1. Communicators
2. Autobiographers
3. Self-Publicists.
The three archetypes were explained in the Visual Communication Quarterly journal.
Communicators
If you’re a communicator, you’re selfie is a means of conversation. The study cites the example of those who shared photos of themselves voting, sparking political conversation or urging others to take action.
Autobiographers
Use selfies as a tool to document their lives, capturing significant moments and memories. An autobiographer is a one-way selfie taker, it’s about putting their images out there and not about what they get back.
A blogger is a perfect example of visual diary keeping; they document there everyday life from their workouts to their acai bowl breakfast.
Self-Publicists
This one is pretty self explanatory but Kim Kardashian West AKA Selfish author is the epitome of a self-publicists. The study co-author Harper Anderson says “in documenting and sharing their lives, they’re hoping to present themselves and their stories in a positive light.”
Begging the question, why study the selfie at all? “Because years from now, our society’s visual history is going to be largely comprised of selfies,” said co-author Matt Lewis. Let that sink in… and next time you’re choosing a filter ask yourself, is this one for the history books?
