Time and time again we’ve been told that we control our lives.
Cue the eye roll – because sure, if we actually had control, our lives would probably look a little, if not a lot different than it does right now.

But what if that saying holds some truth to it? What if we can control our lives, maybe not all of it, but some of it?
Well, if you’ve been on TikTok long enough, you may have stumbled on some videos of people using the word manifestation, and how they’ve used it to make things happen in their life.
Yes, essentially people are turning their thoughts into reality, by just thinking about something and then it goes and happens – I mean imagine the power.
So, we’ve taken a look at the idea of manifestation, and explained everything we know.
First things first, what is manifestation?
So basically, manifestation means to literally think something into existence. What that means is that if you think about something you want for to happen in the future – it can actually happen.
“Manifestation is essentially about cultivating something tangible, through positive thought, belief, intent and action,” Ingrid Asoni, the founder of Consciously Connected Travel explained to Cosmopolitan.
“Manifestation isn’t just thinking about what you want, you also have to be proactive in harvesting a life – complete with an energetic space and actions – that are reflective of the positive desires you want to manifest.”
Manifesting something can be something small like getting your crush to text you first, or something big, like becoming super successful in your career or moving into your dream house.
Is manifestation actually real?
Now, hearing about it, it does sound a little too good to be true. I mean the idea that your thoughts can literally become reality, sounds crazy right?
Well, Dr. Carol Dweck, an American psychologist, did some digging, and her research shows that believing you can do something makes it a whole lot more likely that you’ll successfully do it.
What that means is that having a growth mindset, where we believe that we can learn, grow, and succeed, it can actually affect whether we manifest what we want.
So, how does manifesting work?
The research Dr. Carol Dweck said that if we truly believe we can achieve something, we are willing to do the hard work to achieve it.
Meaning that it’s not just having a random thought about something and then it magically happens – there’s a little bit more to it than that.
In fact, on TikTok, there’s this “3-6-9” manifestation method that has become quite popular.
Basically, by writing down what you want to manifest three times in the morning, six times in the afternoon and nine times in the evening, there’s a good chance that it will actually happen.
For example, you want your crush to finally give you some attention? Just write down their name three times, what you’d like them to do (call, text, etc.) six times and what you’d like them to say nine times.
Of course, there is actually some science behind this too, with Psychology Today having suggested to spend some time getting clear about what your manifestation goal is.
You can use mindful meditation to do this, or you could talk to a friend about it as well.
It also helps to decide what actually matters to you, and ask yourself a few questions so that you can figure out why you want to manifest this, which will make you believe it a bit more and give it a better chance at happening.
Plus, actually picturing in your mind what you want to manifest can help you feel more positive about it – which can help you believe in yourself more.
