For the unfamiliar, navigating TikTok can be a super confusing task. There are a bajillion different inside jokes, trends that change lightning-fast and some of the most confusing hashtags anywhere on the internet. While we are big fans of just opening the app up and seeing where the day takes us (queer TikTok, Chinese streetwear videos, guys getting perms and rave TikToks have been fun), there are a few TikTok hashtags that you can follow if your For You Page isn’t quite hitting like it used to.
Yep, despite its reputation as a giant time-sucking devil in the social media arena, TikTok does actually have some very wholesome and useful content to offer. And no, we’re not only talking about makeup tutorials—though we do wonder if the wealth of videos indicates that TikTok could be the future of beauty tutorials?
Like hashtags on Instagram though, what’s in a given tag may not *always* be relevant to the category. Keep reading for our pick of the best hashtags to follow on TikTok.
#Editing101
TikTok has taught us that sometimes it’s not about the content itself, it’s about the editing. Filters, music, transitions and creative editing in general are the bread and butter of videos on this app. Take a scroll through #Editing101 for tips and tutorials on photo and video editing—including with tools outside TikTok, like Photoshop and VSCO. Similarly, if you’re looking for device or app-specific tips, try the tags #iPhoneTrick, #iPhonePhotography, #PhotoshopTips and so on.
#TikTokTaughtMe
If you’re not 100% sure what you’re looking for but you wanna see what’s out there, a good start is the #TikTokTaughtMe tag. As well as niche things like how to tie your laces correctly (we didn’t realise we were doing it wrong, lol), the tag also features a lot of random facts and life hacks.
#ThriftFlip
Okay so, we’d start by saying this one is probably going to be a little more challenging if you don’t have a sewing machine. However, if you’re a budding seamstress there are a tonne of inspiring clothing transformation videos in the #ThriftFlip tag. Watch in awe as charity shop and thrift store clothes are reworked into amazing new pieces, like the model-approved jeans above.
#TikTokRecipe
Food TikTok is a wondrous place that deserves more recognition in our eyes—and we mean beyond just viral trends like cloud bread and Dalgona whipped coffee. In #TikTokRecipe, you’ll find everything from the most complicated feasts to easy bagels that only use three ingredients to make. If you’re looking for something specific, try that term in front of the word recipe, e.g. #BakingRecipe or #KoreanRecipes.
#MentalHealthTips
First off, TikTok is absolutely not a replacement for a good support network or seeing a mental health professional. However, with the ever-increasing importance of looking after our mental health in these often anxiety-inducing times, TikTok is a great casual resource for mental health tips.
While you will, of course, find some tips in here that are purely from personal experience, there are also actually a growing number of mental health professionals and therapists on the app. You’ll find them sharing answers to common questions, explaining different strategies for coping with anxiety and challenging the common forms of negative self-talk many of us experience. Take a gander through the tag and the related ones like #MentalHealthAwareness.
