How Lorde Came Up With Her Stage Name Is Super Cool

Queen.

Many celebs have a stage name, some may even surprise you because their stage names seem so real, like Calvin Harris, whose real name is Adam.

For Lorde, it was obvious that wasn’t her real name… but how did she come up with something so cool?!

Her real name, Ella Marija Lani Yelich-O’Connor, is a lot longer and more traditional.

“It was actually a really quick decision. It’s quite funny, because I’m like, wow, if I’d known I would be having that name for the rest of my life I probably would have spent more than two days on it,” she said in an interview with 60 Minutes.

“It was a good spontaneous choice, I think. I’m quite proud of my 16-year-old self for not messing that one up because if I’d given myself a cool, weird, hip name that I hated now that would be super annoying.”

She added, “It was that nobility, aristocracy obsession that I had. I hit upon ‘Lord’ and loved the way it sounded, and then I was like, it would be quite cool to add an E to feminise it.”

She even went on to discuss her feminist views.

“It’s totally not about me, it’s about all women — women who might not have the opportunities that I have or the privileges that I have, trying to fight for better conditions and better treatment of all women, whether that be trans women or women of colour or women in professions that don’t typically get a lot of respect.

“That, to me, is what feminism is about, because I think, like, no one needs to fight for me to have an okay run. I’m gonna be fine, but there are women in other, different situations to me that…don’t have a voice or that have a voice and don’t have anybody listening to it.”
