13 Reasons Why star Tommy Dorfman has confirmed she is transgender with a photoshoot we could literally only describe as perfection.
WATCH: 13 Reasons Why trailer:
Tommy Dorfman announced her news to fans via a beautiful feature in TIME magazine, with an accompanying article written by novelist Torrey Peters.
Dorfman revealed she had been privately identifying as a woman for a year now, though she clarified that this wasn’t a ‘coming out’ per se.
“Coming out is always viewed as this grand reveal, but I was never not out,” she explained.
To accompany the article’s publication, Dorman shared her own update on Instagram with several of the stunning images from the TIME piece.
“Thrilled to reintroduce myself as the woman i am today. my pronouns are she/her,” Dorfman wrote.
“Thank you, @time, for this space, @torreyadora for writing this story, and @gizellehernandez for these images.
“I’m especially grateful to every single trans person who walked this path, broke down barriers, and risked their lives to live authentically and radically as themselves before me. thank you to all the trans woman that showed me who i am, how to live, celebrate myself, and take up space in this world.”
Tommy also clarified she will not be changing her name, explaining that she felt a deep connection to it.
“ … I feel very connected to that name, to an uncle who held me as he was dying,” she shared. “This is an evolution of Tommy. I’m becoming more Tommy.”
The actress rose to fame back in 2017 when the teen-drama series 13 Reasons Why was released. Delving into challenging themes including mental health, sexual assault and suicide, the show’s release was a landmark trailblazer in pop culture, sparking more conversations around these issues and opening the dialogue further.
Tommy has also addressed her relationship with Peter Zurkuhlen, whom she married back in 2016.
The pair remain married, though they have “redefined” their relationship, Tommy said.
“I was in a nine-year relationship in which I was thought of as a more male-bodied person, with a gay man. I love him so much, but we’ve been learning that as a trans woman, what I’m interested in is not necessarily reflected in a gay man. So we’ve had incredible conversations to redefine our relationship as friends.”
Tommy has previously spoken of her hope to bring “meaningful” content to her fans given via her very popular Instagram page.
In a 2017 interview with Schön! magazine, she revealed: “It’s interesting to be in a position where I suddenly have a following and a platform, but that’s not necessarily fulfilling to me. I didn’t become an actor to have a million Instagram followers. I also don’t think that the amount of followers I have necessarily means I’m going to do the kind of work I want to do: meaningful work.”
That she certainly has. We cannot wait to see what Tommy does next – her next feature film directed by Lena Dunham is definitely a great place to start.
