The Really Messed Up Thing Disney Made Bella Thorne Do When She Was Younger

Bella Thorne has joined former Disney stars like Miley Cyrus in revealing just how much they were controlled as child stars… and it’s actually scary!

In a new interview with Harper’s Bazaar (where she poses nude for a Marilyn Monroe-inspired shoot fyi), says being in the Disney talent machine meant changing parts of who she was.

Apparently, during her Shake It Up days, executives forced her to change her normally low voice to a higher one because they thought it was more appealing to young audiences. Exhibit A — this clip from when she was celebrating her 13th birthday:

Here she is two years later and you can clearly hear her voice is much lower. Of course we’re not sure if the change was natural but according to what Bella said, it sounds like it was a deliberate decision.

The actress also says Disney yelled at her when she was photographed in a bathing suit at 14. “My mum was so scared after that, for them firing us and us losing our house, so it was kind of like, ‘Don’t be yourself, just be good,'” Bella said.

It was only once Shake It Off ended in 2013 that she figured out who she really was. Bella was finally free to speak with her normal voice and dress more like a tomboy. And although some of her Insta posts might been seen as “controversial,” she insists this is the real her.

“People will ask me, ‘Who are you now?’ But this is who I’ve really been—you just didn’t see me before,” she said. “I was just a puppet. I wasn’t allowed to make my own decisions or think for myself in any way.”
