Former Disney Channel besties Demi Lovato and Selena Gomez are no longer friends, says Demi herself in a raw and open interview with Harper’s Bazaar.
Miley Cyrus tells Demi Lovato about her body-shaming & anxiety
“When you grow up with somebody, you’re always going to have love for them. But I’m not friends with her,” Demi said. “I will always have love for her, and I wish everybody nothing but the best.”
Selena and Demi’s became friends when they both starred on the children’s show Barney & Friends in 2002.
Selena and Demi also starred together in the Disney Channel movie Princess Protection Program in 2009, but they were two of the most iconic Disney stars to come from the network and remain besties for so long.
Fans had hope that the two rekindled their friendship in 2018, when Selena told Elle that she reached out to Demi after her near-fatal overdose that shocked the world.
“I reached out personally. I didn’t do a public thing. I didn’t want to. I…I love her. I’ve known her since I was seven. So…it’s…that’s what I’ll say,” she said at the time.
More recently, Selena even gave Demi some love over her Grammy’s performance. On her Instagram Story, she praised Demi. “I wish there were words to describe how beautiful, inspirational and DESERVED this moment was,” she said. “Demi, I’m so happy for you. Thank you for your courage and bravery.”
But it seems like the only childhood friend Demi has remained close with, is fellow Disney star Miley Cyrus.
“I talk to Miley [Cyrus],” she said in the interview. “She’s awesome, and I love her to death and always will, always have. But I think she’s kind of the only one from that era that I still stay in touch with.”
The pair recently had an open discussion on an Instagram Live together, where Miley opened up about body-shaming and the anxiety she felt for years following her 2014 VMAs performance.
She admitted: “I basically went through two or three years where I wouldn’t wear shorts. I stopped wearing skirts on stage, all this s**t, because after the VMAs and I had on my cute new bodysuit, everyone started comparing me to a turkey.
“I was like just so skinny and so pasty and they kept putting me next to this turkey, and I was feeling so bad about myself that I did not wear a bikini for like two years.”
